How to craft the perfect Instagram Bio

An Instagram bio is the small area underneath your username for you to share some details about yourself or your brand. But it’s also your business card, portfolio and storefront all wrapped into one. You have seconds to make a first impression and if your visitors like what they see, they’ll follow.

Tip #1: Attract your ideal audience

With a fine-tuned bio, you can target your ideal audience so any new visitors will be able to quickly understand what you and your business are all about. Be as specific as possible and include information about your audience’s demographic. It’s important that they quickly identify with you so that they know they’re in the right place. Do this part right and you’re guaranteed followers!

Tip #2: Include keywords

Include relevant keywords for your brand in the name, username, and bio description of your profile. This is where Instagram gets its information from when someone is searching or scrolling the discover section or searching for something. Think about what your audience my type into that search field and make sure you’re using those keywords in your bio.

Tip #3: Tag related accounts

Did you know that you can include links in your bio? When you include a “#” or “@”, it automatically becomes a clickable link. That means you can use your personal Instagram bio to promote your Instagram business profile, or share where you work by mentioning your company’s Instagram username. You can also use relevant hashtags to make sure your profile ranks higher in searches.

Tip #4: Include a CTA

Instagram allows only one single link off the platform within your bio. Use a call-to-action in your description to promote your link to direct your visitors to your best content. That could be your website, a particular blog post, or an e-commerce storefront, for examples. If you have multiple destinations your audience is interested in, you can also use linkinbio tools to create a mini landing page with several links. We happen to use Later’s tool which makes it super easy for us to manage.

Tip #5: Choose the perfect profile picture

If you’re a business on Instagram, you’ll want to use your logo as your profile picture. That’s a given since this will help with long-term brand recognition. If you’ve been following our brand advice for a while, you’ll know by now that your logo should be in every customer interaction.

On the other hand, if your brand is personal, use a headshot as your Instagram profile picture. Your brand is YOU, and a headshot makes your brand both familiar and approachable. Make sure you’re smiling and the shot is well-lit. You can showcase what you do (holding a camera if you’re a photographer, or a bouquet of flowers if you’re a florist), just try to keep it above the waist so that the image doesn’t get too small.
